The Best Time to Take Engagement Photos
When it comes to planning your engagement photos, one of the most important factors to consider is the time of day.
The time of day and location can make a big impact on the look and feel of your photos, as well as the lighting and background.
In this article, we will explore some of the main pros and cons of golden hour photography, overcast conditions during engagement photos and using apps to determine the best time.
Golden Hour: The Classic
You may have already heard of this perfect time to capture stunning engagement photos. Normally this time of day is 1 hour after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is at a low angle.
If you want to convey emotion through your images sunrise and sunset time is an ideal and easy way to use the rich color, deep shadows, and warmth from the sun.
The low angle creates a soft, more diffused light that is flattering for most subjects making it one of the best times for outdoor photography.
Pros
01/ Soft, warm light
Helps create a cozy and atmospheric feel along with being very flattering for portraits and landscapes.
02/ Beautiful colors
One of the only times of the day when the sun can produce rich, golden tones in the sky and on the landscape, adding depth and drama to your photos.
03/ Deep shadows
An amazing time to create silhouettes and other creative shots using the added depth, dimension, and texture to your images.
04/ Better contrast
Produces images with better contrast, as the light is less harsh and more evenly distributed. This can help bring out the details and texture in your photos.
Cons
01/ Limited time frame
One of the main drawbacks is that it only lasts for a relatively short period each day. This can make it difficult to plan and schedule your engagement session.
02/ Difficult to predict
The timing can vary depending on your location and the time of year, making it difficult to predict exactly when it will occur.
03/ Crowds
As the most popular time for photography you may find that popular locations are more crowded during this time making it more difficult to get the shots you want.
Overall, with some planning golden hour photography can be a beautiful and effective way to capture stunning outdoor photos. While there are some challenges to consider, the warm, soft light can create a truly magical atmosphere in photographs.
Overcast: Nature’s Softbox
Sometimes a sunset photo session isn't always the easiest thing to plan, maybe because of schedules, weather or other issues photos need to be taken at a different time.
This is the time I look for overcast conditions. The sky turns into a giant soft box, provides flattering light for couples, and the background turns into a moody atmosphere.
While it can sometimes be difficult to predict overcast conditions for engagement photos its awesome to help create beautiful, unique photos, and moody backdrops that aren't as time constraint as a sunset photo session.
Pros
01/ Soft, diffused light
Overcast days create a soft, diffused light that can be very flattering for an engagement session. This light can help to minimize harsh shadows and create a more even tone in the photos.
02/ Moodier atmosphere
If you're a couple looking for a more dramatic and romantic look this is a great time to use the moodier atmosphere.
03/ No need for shade
On a sunny day, finding shade can be a challenge, as it can create harsh and uneven lighting. On an overcast day, the entire sky acts as a softbox, eliminating the need to find shade and allows for couples to be photographed in more locations.
04/ No need for squinting
Nobody wants to be blinded. It can be difficult for couples to keep their eyes open and avoid squinting in photos on sunny days.
Cons
01/ Limited color
A limited color palette may be present, as the sky is typically grey or white. But this can still be a good time to utilize a smaller color palette focusing more on the couple and their expressions.
02/ Risk of rain
Maybe one of the biggest cons is there is always the risk of rain. I personally enjoy whatever nature decides to throw at an engagement shoot because it can still create beautiful unique photos.
03/ Limited contrast
The mid-tones are much more prevalent on cloudy days resulting in limited contrast. This can make it harder to create visual interest and separation between the subjects and the background as well as textures. But with the right camera, lens choice, and editing visual interest can be brought back.
Overcast and cloudy days can be a beautiful and unique option for couples wanting a dramatic and romantic look. While there are some challenges, the soft, diffused light and moody atmosphere can create stunning photos that are truly one-of-a-kind. It's important to work with a skilled engagement photographer who can adapt to any weather and capture the beauty of your story.
Using Apps to Determine the Best Time
There are several apps and websites that can help you determine the best time for your engagement photos based on your location and the desired look of your photos. Some of these apps and websites include:
01/ The Photographer's Ephemeris
02/ Sun Surveyor
03/ Photopills
04/ Golden Hour
By using these apps and websites, you can easily determine the best time for your engagement photos based on your location and the desired look of your photos. This can be especially helpful if you are planning a photoshoot in a new location or if you are trying to capture specific types of light or shadows in your photos.
The best time of day for your engagement photos will depend on your personal preferences and the look that you are trying to achieve. Experimenting with different times of day and lighting conditions can help you find the best time for your engagement photos.
